Lakefield Telephone Selects Zhone for New Service Delivery

Next-Generation Access Architecture Allows Packet Migration for Cost-Effective Delivery of Triple-Play Services

OAKLAND, Calif. — November 2, 2004 — Zhone Technologies, Inc., the first company dedicated to building total-delivery solutions for voice, data and content services worldwide, announced today that Lakefield Telephone has selected and deployed Zhone's Multi-Access Line Concentrator (MALC™) system for it's new service deployments.

Lakefield has begun deploying Zhone's MALC with 48 port ADSL2+ line cards as its broadband service platform to their current subscribers over existing copper facilities. Zhone's ADSL2+ line card greatly simplifies a carriers network integration efforts by delivering downstream data rate services up to 24 Mbps and upstream data rates ranging up to 3 Mbps. Subscribers beyond the standard serving area also benefit from extended reach capabilities creating new revenue opportunities as carriers capture new broadband subscribers and deliver new bundled services including switched digital video.

"Zhone's high-density 48-port ADSL2+ card allows Lakefield to be well positioned both today and for the future," said Philip Nass, General Manager of Lakefield Telephone. "Using this technology, Lakefield is now providing greater bandwidth and additional reach to our current data customers while preparing for next-generation voice and video services with network reliability, security and intelligence."

Additional bandwidth and reach is achieved while simultaneously preserving investment in previous ADSL CPE already deployed. By simultaneously addressing the need for bandwidth, reach and interoperability, Zhone is enabling operators to more cost effectively provide and deploy cost-effective multi-service networks.

"As part of Zhone's multi-service architecture, the MALC allows carriers to lower costs over the existing local loop infrastructure by migrating to packet based access and transport while adding incremental revenue through converged triple play services," said Michael Fischer, vice president of North American Sales for Zhone.

With support for up to 960 ADSL2+ ports in a 7U chassis, Zhone's MALC offers the most cost effective and highest density concentration of any broadband platform on the market. Additionally, Zhone offers the broadest array of form factors and port counts so that carriers can minimize loop lengths and provide precisely the right sized DSL platform for every demographic.

Additional capabilities include subtending, local or line-powered options and optional waterproof enclosures for pole mounting and outdoor deployments. These capabilities ensure carriers with the most cost-effective deployment options and the shortest possible loop lengths - important considerations for deploying bandwidth hungry advanced applications like VoIP and video. In addition, MALC supports both copper and fiber access lines, integrated transport using GigE and Resilient Packet Rings (RPR), and legacy line side services including narrowband services including POTS and legacy specials.
