Zhone and Coppercom Demonstrate Interoperability with Deployment at Kentucky IOC

Kentucky Telephone Company Stays Competitive with Joint Solution for the Delivery of Next-Gen Voice and Data Services

OAKLAND, Calif., and BOCA RATON, Fla., — January 24, 2006 — Zhone Technologies (NASDAQ: ZHNE), the first company dedicated to building total-delivery solutions for voice, data and content services worldwide, and CopperCom, a leader in next-generation softswitches, today announced the completion of interoperability testing and a successful joint implementation at Kentucky Telephone Company, one of the premier providers of local, long distance, Internet and data services in Kentucky.

Kentucky Telephone Company, an independent operating company (IOC), is deploying Zhone's Multi-Access Line Concentrator (MALC™) Next-Generation Packet Loop Carrier and CopperCom's Converged Switching eXchange® (CSX) softswitch to deliver advanced communication services to its customers. The joint solution is enabling Kentucky Telephone Company to provide the scope and scale of services to its 3000 subscribers only previously available to major metropolitan markets, including voice and data across its entire 5000-square mile service area.

"Zhone and CopperCom are providing us with a flexible architecture that is allowing us to better serve our customers today and expand into new services tomorrow," said Joe McClung, president, Kentucky Telephone Company. "Their joint solution enables us to make the most of our current infrastructure investments to preserve existing revenue, and also to lay the groundwork for a vast array of future services based on pure packet and cell technologies."

CopperCom switches enable local and long-distance service providers to migrate their networks to revenue-generating, next-generation IP services without fear of technical glitches. Its flagship product, the CSX, offers the most robust feature set on the market, ranging from advanced VoIP services to a full set of legacy Class 4 and Class 5 services. Significantly, the CopperCom CSX has been deployed as a replacement for every type of legacy switch currently in operation. Together with Zhone's Single Line Multi-Service (SLMS™) architecture, the CSX provides a blueprint for carriers to consolidate copper and fiber into a single integrated packet infrastructure supporting multiple services transport options.

The two companies successfully achieved interoperability between their products following extensive testing conducted at CopperCom's Interoperability Testing Lab located in Boca Raton, Florida. The lab is recognized within the telecommunications industry as a state-of-the-art facility equipped to verify and support the operation of collaborative communication solutions, such as the one implemented by Kentucky Telephone Company.

"Zhone is pleased to work with CopperCom in enabling new services at Kentucky Telephone," said David Markowitz, vice president of marketing for Zhone. "Expanding our technology through partnerships with leading softswitch vendors, like CopperCom, accelerates the value of Zhone's product portfolio to our customers."

"We are committed to helping IOCs, such as Kentucky Telephone Company, make a smooth transition from a legacy switch-based network to next-generation IP communications," said Mel Ethem, vice president, sales, CopperCom. "By combining our state-of-the-art softswitch technology with Zhone's innovative voice and data solutions, Kentucky Telephone Company is positioned to offer its customers a compelling upgrade from traditional communication services."
