Zhone Technologies Updates MXK Product Portfolio with High-Density VDSL2 Cards

Addition of two cards expected to accelerate MXK's global momentum as company reaches new milestone of 750 unit deployments

Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, is building upon the recent momentum of its flagship MXK™ intelligent multi-services access node (MSAN) by introducing two very-high-bit rate digital subscriber line (VDSL2) cards that significantly increase the density levels of the MXK platform in copper-based networks and enable service providers to achieve an aggregate 100+Mbps throughput on copper last mile for advanced triple-play services. These new cards are especially beneficial in Fiber to the Curb (FTTC) applications and multi-dwelling unit (MDU) environments.

Deployments of the MXK have now exceeded 750 units worldwide as telcos, cable operators and utilities continue to recognize the long-term investment returns received from Zhone's combined gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and Active Ethernet solution. Now, with the addition of the new 24-port VDSL2 card and the 24-port VDSL2 Plus Splitter card, Zhone customers will be able to deliver even higher bandwidth and higher revenue triple-play services via the MXK platform. And with ADSL2+ fall-back support, the new cards offer superior investment protection for many different types and models of CPE.

"Zhone's MXK has been well-received in the industry because it gives carriers the flexibility they need to cost-effectively deliver triple play services over existing facilities, regardless of fiber or xDSL network architecture they're using to do so," noted Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer of Zhone. "We have been very pleased to see such continued global momentum for our flagship MXK system this year, and we will continue to invest in new technologies to strengthen the platform and add new benefits for our customers. The addition of these higher performance VDSL2 cards are the critical next step in addressing their bandwidth needs immediately to ensure greater ROI long-term."

Zhone has shipped more than 750 MXK systems total to over 100 service providers globally since first launching the platform in December 2009. The MXK, which has consistently experienced double-digit growth in Latin America, Europe and the Middle East each quarter since launch, now delivers a potential system capacity of more than 7.5 million FTTH subscribers across all shipped units.

This MXK's full-featured, fully redundant carrier-grade all-IP platform enables service providers to combine data, video and voice in one platform over a pure packet access network – a key contributor to its quick success. As the industry's first terabit access concentrator, MXK has also been widely recognized for its industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity – which provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers. The integration of the new high-density VDSL2 cards underpins the platform's value proposition further.

"It has become clear that rapidly evolving demands on access networks are being met by the MXK and we are highly pleased with the continued acceptance of the solution, which reflects a clean-sheet approach to truly scalable multi-service architecture," continued Caskey. "To demonstrate its increasing popularity, Zhone secured over 71 new customers worldwide in Q3 2010, and more than 20 of them chose to deploy the MXK system in the same period."

Zhone expects MXK demand to become even greater with the addition of the new VDSL2 line cards. The industry-leading high density modules are available in two versions: basic form or with integrated splitters, with each boasting 2592 ports per equipment rack that provide high bandwidth capabilities.

The MXK and the two new VDSL2 cards are also part of Zhone's overall Single Line Multi-Service (SLMS) access operating system, which provides intelligent functionality across all the company's hardware products. Driven by eight years of experience in commercial operation and collaboration with more than 750 service providers worldwide, Zhone's SLMS software delivers functionality critical to today's access networks in advanced networking, quality of experience, voice, security and management.
