Zhone Technologies to Discuss Video Access Strategies, Introduce New GPON Solutions at TelcoTV 2010
Chief Marketing Officer to speak on the next generation of fiber standards
Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, announced today its participation at TelcoTV 2010 in Las Vegas, November 9-11, 2010. In addition to showcasing its flagship MXK™ multi-service access node (MSAN) and indoor Network Interface Device (zNID) gigabit passive optical network (GPON) solutions, Zhone plans to unveil multiple new technologies that will enhance the MXK and zNID product lines and further extend its leadership position in GPON.
Although multimedia entertainment has become one of the more exciting service offerings delivered today, it has also become one of the more challenging services to deploy for many operators. Consumers' video expectations have evolved from basic analog service to a more interactive, more personalized experience with a multitude of content and application choices – across all screens – in all regions of the world. As operators prepare their response to such demand, the need to upgrade network capabilities has become evident. Zhone's access solutions deliver a diverse range of fiber and copper capabilities in a single converged solution, and its advanced all-IP multi-service product portfolio is ideally suited for any combination of residential or business broadband, voice and entertainment services.
Specifically, the MXK platform helps set the foundation for enhanced video service delivery by providing the optimal solution from the Edge-to-the-Core of the operator's network, enabling the operator to overlay IPTV and entertainment services to provide a converged voice, data and entertainment service over any access medium. It features interoperability capabilities with various headend, middleware, VOD and STB technologies and supports both RF and IP video over fiber, working seamlessly for PON or point-to-point IP video over copper to mitigate any transition challenges operators may experience with legacy networks.
"North American operators are making significant investments in their IPTV network upgrades in an effort to increase the reliability, speed and competitiveness of their triple-play services," said Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer, Zhone. "And we know that the service providers are transitioning from different legacy technologies while trying to serve the same customers. That's why we designed our systems with increased density and flexibility features that could accommodate such varying requirements."
Zhone has shipped more than 750 MXK systems total to over 100 service providers globally with a potential capacity to support over 7.5 million FTTH subscribers. Zhone's MXK platform is a fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP platform and the industry's first terabit access concentrator. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers.

In addition, Brian Caskey will speak about the potential of 10Gb/s EPON and 10 Gb/s GPON technologies during "The Next Generation of Fiber Standards" panel discussion on November 11, 2010 at 1:05-2:05 p.m. As the latest FTTH technology, GPON provides an enormous 2.5 Gb/s of bandwidth, but the industry is already looking ahead to next-generation PON standards to provide both additional bandwidth and reach. This session will debate which solutions are best suited for new greenfield deployments, which PON architectures will best support service trends and operational requirements and the evolution of existing GPON deployments.
