Overview
Zhone's Active Ethernet Module (AEM100-16) for the IPD delivers 16-ports of sustained, high-speed, symmetric 802.3 Ethernet services over copper or fiber facilities, and can be used in Residential FTTx, Multi Dwelling Units (MDUs), Business Parks, as well as applications requiring subtended Ethernet services.
The sixteen (16) individual ports on an AEM100-16 line card can be equipped with industry-standard, SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceiver modules. These SFPs provide the media interface for Zhone's Active Ethernet solution, enabling support for both copper (10/100/1000 Mbps) and fiber (100/1000 Mbps) from a single line card.
Zhone's IP DSLAM (IPD) is a high-capacity system, ideal for data and video networks. Each IPD line card slot has access to a full-duplex, GigE link to each of the two BSX8000 Broadband Switch Uplink cards, and each BSX card can be equipped with up to eight (8) GigE facilities in the upstream direction.
Each of the 16-ports on an AEM100-16 module interfaces to a fifth-generation, BCM56510 GigE switch chip from Broadcom's StrataSwitch® and StrataXGS® product line. Service providers can individually provision the maximum data rate to be supported on each port of this device. In this way, tiered service levels can be defined on a per-port basis while ensuring that each AEM100-16 access port has access to its fair-share of bandwidth to the AEM100-16 Central Processing Unit (CPU), where additional Multi-media Traffic Management (MTM) rules can be applied.
Zhone’s complete MTM traffic management feature set is supported on the AEM100-16. This includes the ability to prioritize traffic based on DSCP, IP address range, MAC address range, or VLAN range. Rate limiting features and 802.1p priority also ensure that specific applications are given appropriate priority and bandwidth allocation throughout the system, while marking packets for VLAN and QoS management by upstream network devices. In addition, IP Multicast and IGMP Snooping support ensures that video traffic is intelligently distributed throughout the system and the AEM100-16 line card, allowing video streams to only flow to the appropriate ports.
