  • 10 Active Ethernet ports
  • Gigabit-Ethernet or 100Fx fiber or 10/100/1000 Mbps copper
  • Up to 80km reach
  • SFP-based media interfaces for flexibility – mix copper and fiber on the same card
  • IP Switch on each card
  • Distributed IGMP for optimum IPTV multicast performance
  • IEEE 802.ah EFM standards-based Ethernet ensures interoperability
  • Full remote management via Zhone's ZMS management system

Zhone's Active Ethernet technology provides ultra-high speed, full-duplex bandwidth over copper or fiber for use in business, MDU, residential and subtending applications.

Based on the IEEE 802.ah Ethernet in the First Mile Fiber (EFMF) standard, Active Ethernet provides symmetric bandwidth of up to 1Gbps per port over a single fiber strand by employing a two-wavelength multiplexer that splits the signal into separate transmit and receive wavelengths (G.652). Dual fiber connections are also supported. Fiber lengths of up to 80 km are supported, regardless of the number of subscribers being served.

SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceiver modules provide the media interface for Zhone's Active Ethernet solution, enabling support for both copper (10/100/1000 Mbps) and fiber (single-mode or multi-mode, up to 1 Gbps) from a single line card.

Network Flexibility / Long Reach Capabilities

Active Ethernet is a point-to-point solution, utilizing a full fiber strand between each node. In fiber-rich environments Active Ethernet provides high flexibility, enabling bandwidth and subscriber management that are not dependent on shared media. Furthermore, since Active Ethernet supports fiber lengths of up to 80km, carriers can support large service areas from a single node.

Standards-Based Ethernet Ensures Interoperability

EFMF is an IEEE standard, ensuring interoperability with 3rd-party CPE

Dedicated Bandwidth

Active Ethernet provides dedicated, bi-directional bandwidth to each downstream node, as opposed to the shared bandwidth delivered by PON-based systems. As a result Active Ethernet enables more bandwidth to each node, typically up to 100 Mbps per residential subscriber or up to 1 Gbps symmetric bandwidth per enterprise subscriber. This bandwidth is easier to manage and inherently more secure than shared bandwidth technologies.

Commercial Services

Delivering from 10Mbps to 1 Gbps of symmetric bandwidth to enterprise subscribers enables high-value commercial services, delivered via cost-effective media converters at the customer premises. Service providers can easily manage and deliver tiered levels of services supporting seamless QoS. Typical applications include transparent LAN services, Internet access, and transport services.

Subtending / MDU Applications

Active Ethernet can deliver up to 1Gbps to subtended network access systems, including DSLAMs, and Broadband Loop Carriers, providing cost-effective aggregation of remote terminals or multi-dwelling unit (MDU) terminals.
