SLMS UPDATE

Leverage Zhone's New SLMS Release 1.14 for Greater Competitive Advantage

Zhone's SLMS (Single Line Multi-Service) access operating system provides intelligent MSAP, FTTx, and EFM functionality on the company's multiple hardware products, offering advanced capabilities, consistent operational interfaces, and unmatched performance across a wide range of form factors and service definitions. By leveraging SLMS throughout their networks, operators secure greater competitive advantage through more rapid deployment of new service differentiation as well as reduced costs of operation, training, sparing, and back office management.

The product of nine years of continuous development, incorporating innovations driven by collaboration with hundreds of service providers in more than 70 countries, Zhone's latest SLMS release adds functionality critical to today's access networks in a number of areas. Highlights include:

Advanced Networking

ADSL2+ bondingAs triple-play bundles include ever more HD content, access network bandwidth requirements continue to rise. In situations where deploying fiber is impractical, bonded ADSL2+ enables advanced video services over copper infrastructure with excellent reach.
Broadcom PhyR noise protectionThe reach of ADSL2+ is limited in part by impulse noise in the environment. By reducing susceptibility to noise, our support for Broadcom's new PhyR(tm) technology can provide up to 3 dB of coding gain.
LACPThe IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol allows multiple physical uplink ports to function as one logical port with higher bandwidth and a significant increase in resiliency.
RSTPThe IEEE 802.1d Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol ensures loop-free bridged network topologies, with quick recovery in the event of network segment changes or outages.
Enhanced two-wire metallic testingNow you can perform metallic loop testing with Zhone's platforms without an external test set, allowing you to easily measure distance, identify shorts, unbalanced lines, metallic noise, and more, on any two-wire port on the shelf.

Quality of Service

Three-color policingMetering Ethernet frames according to the traffic's rate relative to committed or peak rates - in order to control ingress - is essential to delivering differentiated services with consistent quality.
Rate shaping per serviceBecause different categories and classes of service have inherently different rate requirements, SLMS allows highly configurable traffic rate shaping and prioritization to be applied on a per-service basis.
IP SLA metricsZhone's implementation of IP SLA allows the collection of an array of continuous traffic statistics between any two IP addresses in a network, enabling (for example) business-service offers over EFM that have detailed statistics to back up service guarantees or for troubleshooting.

Voice

Softswitch interopZhone continues to enhance the breadth and depth of our interoperability with the world's leading softswitches. Capabilities now include advanced calling feature support over industry-standard SIP, H.248, and MGCP protocols. See our VoIP Partners section for more details.
P-PhoneZhone's new line interfaces provide connectivity for operators serving customers with Nortel EBS P-phones. These operators are interested in maintaining P-phone voice revenues while moving to modern network architectures, which is made possible now through the addition of P-phone support to our multi-service platforms. Zhone's implementation of the unique digital interface to those phones exemplifies the flexibility of the SLMS architecture.

Security

Dynamic IP filteringDynamic IP filtering accommodates subscriber-specific access control in a DHCP environment.
RADIUS authentication, SSH, and SFTPA number of customers have asked for additional measures that prevent unauthorized access to their networks' management layers, and Zhone has responded with higher levels of internal encryption and management user authentication.

This release also includes enhancements to the web user interfaces for configuration and maintenance of individual platforms, simplifying operator training requirements in the face of increasingly complex access networks.
