Application

As service providers look to boost revenues and offer new multimedia services, bandwidth availability and service quality becomes crucial. The need to deliver high-definition video, faster Internet services, and on-demand content combine to require high-speed fiber-based services. Standards-based GPON and Active Ethernet technologies have become the solutions choice for delivery of fully featured Triple Play networks.

Historically, the requisite high construction and installation costs required to deploy FTTx have presented a significant barrier to its widespread adoption. Similarly, the time consuming and costly process to re-wire homes with Ethernet for IPTV have slowed deployment as well. Fiber is commonly looked to for new developments and greenfield applications, where the costs to deploy fiber are no greater than those to deploy new copper. However, increasingly carriers are beginning the migration of FTTx into existing neighborhoods to ensure the necessary bandwidth is available to deliver a competitive suite of services. Zhone has addressed these challenges from a service provider’s perspective and developed solutions to simplify the installation of FTTx, minimize operational costs, and deliver networks fully capable of offering competitive "Triple Play" services - with no new, in-home wiring.

Zhone offers a complete solution with the MXK and zNID family of intelligent gateway products for every type of FTTx application. Zhone enables the intelligent, managed convergence of broadband services between the carrier and home network with up to 100 Mbps of bandwidth across a complete FTTx solution.

Solution: MXK and zNID

Zhone’s innovative approach to GPON based FTTx, utilizes the MXK and terminates at the premises with the zNID ONT, dramatically lowering the cost of fiber to the premise deployment and related operational expenses. Zhone addresses installation efficiency, powering the ONT locally, utilizing existing in-home wiring, and facilitating remote management and troubleshooting without a truck roll once an installation is complete.

The MXK is a converged services access platform that can be configured as a GPON or Active Ethernet OLT. The MXK GPON line card is ITU-T G.984 compliant, delivering up to 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream. Each line card is designed for up to 64 passive splits per fiber. Active Ethernet delivers up to 100 Mbps point-to-point from a 20-port card.

Zhone also provides its own line of passive optical splitters and WDM combiners which are thoroughly tested for optimum performance with the MXK GPON line card to ensure optical loss is within budget. It also benefits a customer in getting a complete solution from a single vendor that is fully tested as a system.

zNID: No new wires - no new holes

Zhone's industry leading zNID is the intelligent convergence of ONT and home networking technology - delivering up to 100 Mbps to the home. Both indoor and outdoor zNIDs are offered, with the outdoor zNIDs designed as rugged, weatherproof solutions capable of sustaining the hottest or coldest of weather extremes. zNID can be locally powered via the phone lines already in the home, or AC powered. Outdoor zNIDs have an optional battery back up system that can be installed separately from the zNID. Combined with HPNA for distribution of services in the residence over coax or phone lines directly from the zNID, additional benefits of outdoor zNIDs are the elimination of new wiring and installation in the home, and no disruptive drilling inside the home.

The zNID is the first-of-its-kind intelligent home gateway to integrate HPNA over both existing in-home coax or phone lines - both capable of delivering Ethernet up to 100 Mbps. The zNID incorporates advanced layer 2 and layer 3 IP capabilities to serve as an intelligent multi-service device at the home. It supports choice of bridging, switching or routing of services and incorporates industry standard DSL Forum TR69 for remote provisioning and management from a server used for all other DSL CPE devices.

• GPON: Standards G.984x GPON with up to 3600 100 Mbps subscribers per chassis. Zhone also provides a clean interface to a fully standards-compliant OMCI implementation with Smart OMCI, which enables the MXK OLT to interoperate with any vendor’s ONT, yielding rapid ONT and service extension with OLT software upgrades.
• Active Ethernet: 10/100/1000 Mb/s point-to-point EFM standards Active Ethernet dual port subscriber cards, with 20 ports per card.
• Weatherproof outdoor zNID: A separate fiber tray & electronics tray in a single enclosure can be installed separately. Environmentally rugged weatherproof enclosure with special heat sink built-in ensures long life for the electronics.
• HPNA3 Home networking: Up to 100 Mbps. per second over standard phone line or coax autonomously within the home, providing both flexibility of media and eliminating the need for new wiring in the home.
• Power from phone line: zNID can be powered from existing home phone lines, with optional battery back up in the event of power failure.
• Remote Management and Diagnostics: zNID incorporates DSL Forum TR69 for centralized, remote management and trouble shooting.
• Layer 3 Intelligence: QoS, CoS, IGMP multicast, VPN and firewall along with advanced traffic management are among the IP features integrated into the zNID.
• Remote Broadband Access: The zNID provides subscribers a secure VPN web access to their home network through a special port for value added service capabilities.
