Triple Play

Delivering the complete IP video, voice and HSIA bundle

Tom White “Consolidated Communications began offering Triple Play services several years ago after selecting Zhone and the MALC as our access platform. We have been very successful in offering very competitive voice, data and IPTV video services from MALC, and continue to grow our subscriber base.”

Application

Implementing Triple Play services has become a competitive necessity for service providers. Bundling video, voice and HSIA services increases revenue and retains customers. Triple play creates service tiers that incorporate value-added services and features, resulting in long term growth opportunities. Games, personal TV, and personal hosting are just a few of the applications that Triple Play offers.

At its inception, triple play was defined as adding video (IPTV) and broadband HSIA to an existing POTS service using DSL. The conversion to Ethernet networks and services on a global scale has re-defined triple play as a bundled, multi-media service over IP.

Delivering IPTV, VOD, VoIP and HSIA over IP requires an access platform capable of supporting all services over copper or fiber that include a full range of IP-based Quality of Service (QoS) features on a subscriber-by-subscriber basis, as well as across the network. Migrating from IP video and data overlay to existing POTS to a fully integrated IP services triple play bundle begins with access.

At the core of Triple Play is service management. Having a complete Element Management and QoS system for converged IP triple play assures commercial viability.

Solution: MALC and ZMS

MALC is a full service triple play access platform that can simultaneously deliver IPTV, VoIP, POTS and HSIA on copper or fiber media. MALC is an intelligent broadband IP access system designed for Triple Play, with the highest density and built-in features on the market. MALC is an intelligent, full service Broadband Loop carrier (BLC) with added IP functionality specifically intended for Triple Play.

The MALC, along with Zhone’s other access and transport solutions, is supported by a common management system. The Zhone Management System (ZMS) is a GUI-based EMS. ZMS manages the OSMINE-certified devices, providing service providers with all the fault, configuration, accounting, provisioning and security (FCAPS) features required for a manageable and reliable Triple Play service offering. It automates a number of complex, tedious, and error-prone tasks, thereby raising productivity, improving accuracy and reducing operational costs.

Since MALC is a multi-service, mulit-media IP access platform, ZMS enables service providers to go beyond basic element management and use a variety of powerful QoS tools for prioritizing traffic, classifying traffic, performing rate shaping and limiting, as well as monitoring performance.

MALC also has the IP functionality built-in and required to deliver converged IP Triple Play services. With MALC, service control moves closer to the subscriber, instead of farther back in the network.

Features

  • Delivering triple play on fiber or copper: A unified access platform and management approach for triple play over copper and fiber.
  • Functionality for bundled services: MALC has integrated IGMP proxy, bridging or routing, DHCP server/relay, and IP QoS to support bundled video, data and voice triple play. Support for SIP, MGCP and H.248 VoIP are also integrated.
  • Legacy Voice Services: Along with IP services like IPTV, HSIA and VoIP, MALC is also a complete NGDLC capable of delivering legacy voice services such as POTS.
  • Scalable ZMS: The ZMS architecture scales to support millions of access lines off a single fault-tolerant system. ZMS integrates with northbound external NMS/OSS systems, and a HTML web-based version is offered.
  • Migration to IP Ethernet: MALC fully supports delivery of IPTV and Internet data over DSL using existing POTS lines, but also allows the migration to all Ethernet services by providing voice gateway functionality for POTS to be integrated with IPTV and Internet data over Gigabit to the central site.
  • OPX Cabinets: outside plant cabinet solutions in small footprint 4300 series OPX cabinets or larger 5200 series OPX cabinets in designs specifically for FTTx application in the loop distribution plant.
  • Residential modems and ONT's: Zhone has a complete line of complimentary DSL modems, multi-port routers and WiFi models for a complete residential broadband service. Zhone also has a corresponding fiber ONT line for it’s FTTx solutions.
  • Environmental: The MALC is GR-487 compliant and is designed for outside plant deployment. For CO use, MALC is NEBS compliant.

Zhone Value Proposition and Benefits

Integrating all video, voice and data services on a single platform using copper or fiber reduces electronics in the loop network and therefore lowers capital costs. Delivering bundled triple play services from the MALC over IP provides greater operational efficiency. Integrating all services and subscriber lines onto a single access and management platform reduces manpower and complexity. And finally, bundled triple play from the MALC enables implementation of enhanced value-added revenue services.

Zhone's Single Line Multi-Service architecture (SLMS™), allows carriers to concurrently deliver voice, new premium data and video services over copper or fiber access lines.
