TDM Voice / POTS

Zhone maintains legacy TDM voice / POTS while enabling new broadband services

Steve Lysne “We began using MALC for broadband ADSL and SHDSL services, but have expanded its use for basic TDM POTS as well in those areas voice is needed. The flexibility of MALC as a full service BLC to meet our service needs as they arise is very important to SRT.”

—Steve Lysne, CEO and GM, SRT Communications

Application

Residential POTS is still core revenue service to ILEC’s as well many CLEC’s. As long as Class 5 switches have an amortized life in the network, TDM POTS services will be offered. The ability to deliver core lifeline POTS and at the same time implement residential broadband data and/or video services (triple play) is a basic need for most service providers offering POTS services today.

POTS services must meet certain standard criteria related to quality of service and the access equipment that supports these services must therefore meet those requirements. Redundancy and the ability to deliver dialtone when a network failure occurs are some of the core reuirements for POTS services. In addition to support the worldwide POTS market the access equipment must support GR303 and V5.2 interfaces to the voice switches.

Solution: MALC

As a NGDLC the MALC supports traditional TDM based voice with a complete range of broadband services. As a Broadband Loop Carrier (BLC), MALC supports the full range of VoIP capabilities enabling easy migration to VoIP services at the right time, while not stranding existing investments. Emergency Standalone (ESA) feature enables voice calls to be connected to switches when a connection is cut or disabled allowing operators to provide for emergency communication services.

Zhone's TDM Voice / POTS Solution

In lieu of having to overlay existing POTS DLC in cabinets with DSL DSLAM’s, the MALC let’s a carrier combine POTS and broadband from one shelf. Carriers can maintain their core POTS business while expanding broadband services and adding IPTV, VoIP and IP multimedia services using one platform. The high density port design of MALC allows any combination of POTS and broadband to be delivered from a single shelf with much higher capacity than typically available in a separate NGDLC and DSLAM together. For instance, MALC 100, MALC 319, and MALC 719/723 all offer a high density 48 port ADSL2+/POTS combo card.

Zhone Value Proposition and Benefits

Zhone does not overlook a carriers' core POTS services and revenues in its support of broadband IP video and data services. MALC supports both VoIP and POTS, allowing service providers the flexibility to choose or migrate voice as their service needs dictate. Supporting broadband and POTS in one access platform, MALC lowers both CapEx and OpEx by a single platform solution rather than a separate NGDLC and DSLAM in OPX cabinet deployments.
