ESIM5700-48

48-Port EFM SHDSL Inverse Multiplexer

Firmware Version 1.01.03

May 8, 2007

New Features and Enhancements

Bug fixes:

1) A problem with the system clock rolling-over after 47.9 days has been corrected. The problem could cause issues with system functions dependent on timing with that clock. The most prevalent symptom is a loss of traffic and link control on the card.

2) The ESIM5700 will no longer disappear from the BSX management view if ESIM5700 traffic rates become excessive. The buffer size was increased to allow for chassis management packets to pass at all traffic rates.

3) This code provides better interoperibility with older SNE2000-S units running the 4.3.50 firmware or earlier when linking at the maximum SDSL rate. See the Additional Notes section below for more details.

4) The default SNR margin value for a port that has no DSL link is now initialized properly.

Known Restrictions and Limitations

Currently the ESIM5700-48 does not support BERT. This feature will be added in a future release of code.

In order to maintain proper traffic flow, at least one MTM (Multi-media Traffic Management) (QoS) rule of any kind must be enabled at all times on each SDSL port. By default, there is one MTM VLAN rule enabled. This rule will pass all untagged traffic through the DSL port.

If VLAN tagged Priority traffic (802.1p) is desired, an MTM rule must be configured. VLAN Priority "P" tags must be configured in the Upstream network in order for Priority settings to function in the Downstream direction. The ESIM5700 will add "P" tags for traffic flowing Upstream from the modem.

The ESIM5700-48 can only be configured in Provider mode. It will not support Subscriber mode.

Compatibility Issues

The ESIM5700-48 must be installed in an IP DSLAM with a BSX8000-5 management card running firmware version 1.07.02 or higher.

The MUM2000-2 does not support the ESIM5700-48.

For optimal compatibility, Zhone recommends maintaining ESIM5700-48 firmware at the latest available version. To upgrade the ESIM5700-48 card, refer to the Upgrade procedure at:
http://www.zhone.com/support/manuals/docs/nettonet/230-0000032_r05.pdf

If a G.SHDSL link is not achieved, at long distances, when in Rate Adaptive mode, try Fixed rate mode by setting Min and Max Data Rates to the same value.

Currently if any of the following speeds are desired in Fixed rate mode, then the line's Constellation should be changed from Adaptive to TCPAM_32 - 3648, 3584, 3456, 3264, or 3200 Kbps.

The Fixed rate of 3776Kbps is not supported.

The ESIM5700-48 differs from the SIM2000-24 in that the ESIM5700 link rate is reported in terms of data rate, whereas the SIM2000-24 reports link rate in terms of line rate. Data rate is typically 8Kbps less than line rate. Therefore, adding 8Kbps to all reported rates on the ESIM5700-48 will give you information in the same terms as that reported by the SIM2000-24 card.

If is recommended that the CPE connecting to the ESIM5700-48 be configured in Adaptive Rate mode, even if the ESIM5700-48 is configured for Fixed rate mode.

ESIM5700-48 firmware version 1.00.00 (or above) is required for SDSL loop bonding. The SHDSL equipment at both ends of a subscriber loop must be SHDSL loop bonding capable in order for the loop bonding feature to be utilized. Refer to Zhone's SDSL Loop Bonding Product to Product Feature Compatibility document at http://www.zhone.com/support/manuals/docs/AZ/COMP-A2-GK42-00.pdf for a complete list of loop bonding capable products and required firmware versions.

The ETHX-3300 and ETHX-2100 Series devices cannot be remotely reset via the ESIM5700 card. All ETHX-33x4 and ETHX-21xx models must be remotely reset by first logging into the ETHX device and resetting it from there. In order to remotely reset Zhone's SNE2040G-S (SHDSL CPE) via the IPD web management, the SNE2040G-S must have firmware version 6.00.00 or higher.

Additional Notes

1) To pass VLAN traffic through the ESIM5700, an additional VLAN Rule can be configured in web management as follows:
Rule # 2 Yes tagged 1 4085 keep tag (all other columns can be left in default).
This VLAN Rule will allow all VLAN tagged traffic from 1 to 4085 to pass through the DSL port. If untagged traffic is also desired, leave VLAN Rule 1 active.

2) Firmware 1.01.03 adds support for sub-rate i=1 for TCPAM16 at rates 2312 and below. This provides more rates for better compatibility with the older SNE2000-S units.

The following guidelines apply:

  • For the maximum rate on a port connected to an older SNE2000 running version 4.03.50 or older, set the ESIM5700 port to 2312.
  • For an ESIM5700 port connected to an older SNE2000, never set the ESIM port speed at 2304 or higher than 2312. Sub-rate 1 is not supported for TCPAM-32.
  • The resultant port link speed will be (n * 64 kbps) plus (i * 8 kbps) where 'n' is at least 3 and 'i' is 0 or 1. 'n' is the primary rate and 'i' is the sub-rate.

The Conexant DSP version is: shdslp2_e309.03.120_Api_672
